She NEVER Gave Up On Her Dream
Do you have a dream? How long are you willing to fight to make that dream come true? Famed swimmer Diana Nyad is living proof that even if it takes longer than you expect, never give up.
One of the world’s greatest long-distance swimmers in the 1970s, Diana dreamed of becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to the U.S. without a shark cage. So she tried, and failed. 32 years went by and Nyad couldn’t get that quest out of her mind.
“I though you know what? I’m going to go back and chase that big, maybe impossible dream of mine.”
So at the age of 60 she tried again, and failed. And failed again and again. She failed four times in all. “Even my team was telling me that maybe it just couldn’t be done,” she says. But Diana never gave up.
Then at the age of 64, she did the impossible, swimming 110 miles in 53 grueling hours.
“I was dazed emotionally and ripped physically, still, when I got out of the water there were two things I wanted to say. Never, ever give up, and you’re never too old to chase your dreams.”
Diana has inspired people in and out of the water for her outlook on life, and her takeaway for TOA Fitness will apply to you, too.
“We’re all living on this one way street,” she says.
“You can never do this day over again. You’re going to get to the end whether it’s 85, 95 or 105. Your goal is not to look back and say, ‘I shoulda, I coulda, I wished I had.’
When you get to the end you want to have zero regrets and the way to do that is by realizing your age is a limitation. No matter how old you are, your age in not a limitation.”
Diana says every success and every failure we experience in life makes us better, smarter, and more prepared for challenges than we’ve ever been.
“I actually think I’m a better athlete in my 60s than I was in my 20s,” she says. “I truly believe it.”
Nyad believes we are all capable of achieving our dreams by always holding on to hope.
