Let adversity forge you on!

I was speaking with another Functional Aging Specialist peer from the Chicago area last week and she disagrees that any of you could relate or be motivated by a story like the following. I would love a quick response regarding what could I write that would help to forge you on?

… Or DO stories like this one help to motivate you into considering making a change in your own life?

Jeanne Stawiecki proves that it’s never too late to make dramatic changes in life. She was in her forties when she suddenly became afraid for her life.

She realized that she couldn’t even walk up a flight of stairs without struggling to breathe. As a nurse, this was unacceptable to her. Jeanne decided to quit smoking, she was up to two packs a day, and she began to exercise. She gravitated towards running, never expecting where her feet would take her!

At the age of 44 she ran her first marathon and she loved it.  Soon, she had turned her life, and her health around.

Between October 2006 and February 2007, Jeanne ran a marathon on each of the world’s seven continents. That’s seven marathons in just 141 days.

Then in March 2007, at the age of 57, she reached the summit of Mount Everest, completing her quest to climb the world’s tallest mountains. Her achievement put her into the Guinness Books of World Records as the oldest woman to conquer the Seven Summits. And after that? She just kept going.

She continues to run in some of the world’s top marathons, including New York City and Boston, and says that she feels grateful for all of the challenges she endured and has overcome.

On her blog, Jeanne shares this:

“Now, looking back, I realize that every adversity forged me… every adversity created circumstances I had to respond to and with every one of them I became stronger and more confident,” she says. “When you begin to think differently about the adversity in your life, and truly believe that each and every challenge is a chance to grow and not your personal failure, life really does become more exciting.”
